Nesting birds and squirrels might be interesting to watch to some people, but allowing nesting in disused chimneys is definitely not recommended they can easily become trapped and die a slow death. The smell of the decomposing bird can often be over bearing throughout the house.
Not only do these nests block the passage of essential ventilation but, as anyone who has cleaned out a 'nesting chimney' will confirm, they accumulate a dreadful unhygienic mess and can be extremely difficult to remove.
To add to this problem, rain penetrating the nest is then trapped in the chimney, while the nest acts as an effective barrier to inhibit drying out.
We have had customers return from a vacation to find sooty baby seagulls running around the house, having fallen out of the nest and down the chimney or worse still dead ones having starved to death.You can imagine the smell and the mess!!
One customer even went to the length of having her bricked-up fireplace knocked-out to rescue a fallen bird at great expense.
